Spring and the Wood Element in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ~ 5 Element Theory

The 5 Element Theory is a philosophy and framework for describing the relationship between the Elements, the human body and our life force, also referred to as “Chi’ or “Qi”. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each Element corresponds to various aspects such as a season, organ, meridians, colour, emotion, existential reflection and and many other features. Most people are a combination of the Elements but have one which is more dominant. Here, we will focus on the Wood element; its strengths and gifts and some Woody tips to help you stay nourished in spring!

1.    Spring and new beginnings

The season of spring is associated to the Wood element. Spring is the start of a new season and cycle and is all about awakening, expansion and new beginnings. Flowers start to blossom and new life beckons.

Spring assists us to put “new ideas” into life and nature is helping us to plant. The energy of Wood is upwards and the typical symbol of Wood is the tree. We can use the teachings of the tree to stay rooted, energised and focused on our purpose. Spring is also a time of optimism and possibility. It is a time for growth. Hurrah!

2.    Vision, dreams, direction and purpose

Wood is about our path, direction and purpose. In winter, we take time to go inwards, reflect and contemplate so that we can emerge when spring arrives. Think of the animals who hibernate and some plants who move with the cycles of nature.

 It is the essence of Wood that generates new ideas and brings them to life. Wood is about connecting to our inner compass and finding our own inner map, so that we can plan and find direction. As we come out of the deep slumber from winter, we begin to think, plan and take action again. The Wood element is about is having vision and “seeing” with the organ of the eyes. People with a strong Wood element have a pioneering spirit, are creative and entrepreneurial. This is the Wood “zesty” energy of dreaming and imagining. Hello world.

3.    Body and Mind

The Wood element is associated with the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. The Liver is the yin organ of the Wood Element and is the most important organ for the smooth flow of blood and “Qi” and the smooth flow of emotions. It is like the architect or “planner” of our life. The liver is the only organ that can restore and renew itself even if 80% of it was removed!

The Gallbladder is the yang organ of the Wood Element, responsible for helping the body digest fats. It is about decision making and courage. The Gallbladder helps us take action. So, both meridians are working in sync with one another; planning and making decisions!

4.    Colour

Think green for a balanced and healthy Wood element and eating a bunch of green foods. Consider the meaning of the colour green; some words to describe green would be freshness, calm, vitality, growth and aliveness. What words come up for you?

How many green items are in your wardrobe or do you have green plants in your home? Green is about peace and nature. Green means “go”, like you have been given the “green light”.

5.    Ways to nourish the Wood Element in yourself:

Hike or walk

  • Regular exercise such as yin yoga

  • Take up a cause

  • Spend time around trees or grow a plant

  • Eat green foods!
